Batam Firstimer

What can we do in Batam for less than $200?

Morning take ferry ($44) from 小岛 to Batam. It takes an hour to reach Batam. Get a immigration stamp on your passport (priceless). Go do SPA (range from $30 to $50) for ~3 hours. Have lunch at Golden Prawn ($14). I guess this is the only decent restaurant in town. The food is so-so only. If you fancy some Kuih Lapis ($24 for 1.5kg), order before SPA and collect it after lunch. Fresh from oven. Get ready to go back to Ferry Terminal. Collect ferry ticket and then do some shopping in the MegaMall across the street. Buy 2 packets of Lays potatoes chips ($0.90 per pack), some J.Co donut ($8.10 for a dozen) and A&W rootbeer ($2). They use soft ice-cream... Weird.

Sea port tax in SG $20 and Indo $7. Comparing Vivocity + HarbourFront + NEL + Seah Im to Batam MegaMall, we will roughly know why there is such a big difference.

Why am I Unhappy in KL

1. The house very very very uncomfortable. I don't like to stay inside the house. There is nothing to do except watching TV. But there is no curtain in the living room. The window is facing west somemore. Very glaring and hot.
2. The toilet cannot flush properly. There is always some leftover in the toilet bowl either tissue or you know what...
3. For our room, nothing has been changed besides the bedframe. All the other furniture remain the same 20-year-old furniture. Light is dim and no dressing table nor mirror available. On 27 Nov 09, we had our wedding in KL. After the dinner, I can't even remove my make up thoroughly. I told you I wanted curtain in the room way before our wedding. The curtain was finally done up in the very morning after our wedding dinner. Initiated again, by me!! Because I was waken up by the rising sun. I felt sooooo.... pathetic.
Did I ask for too much? Just some curtain and minor repair works at home....

Becareful when roaming overseas

When u go overseas, the incoming charge, outgoing charge and data charge are quite expensive. (per min basis)

incoming charge is how much singapore calls to your location eg 70 cents

outgoing could be either local 50 cents , singapore 60 cents or overseas. Currently overseas outgoing via smart roam is the cheaper option becos u need to pay the location to singapore charge 70 cents ( usually same rate with incoming call) and then a zonal charge xx cents. If you do a outgoing direct overseas it will cost a flat rate of $4

So think twice. Data is more expensive on a per MB basis unless a flat rate per day is applicable otherwise it could cost a bomb.

Singtel recently came out with a travel SIM which gives u 2 number overseas and singapore number on the same sim. whether your caller is local or overseas there are no roaming charge for u or the caller. But there is a monthly charge of 10 dollar per number but receiving calls is practically free

location sin -> sin caller local rate ; overseas caller local rate (via overseas number)
location overseas -> sin caller local rate via sin number ;overseas caller local rate

I am back for good

Finally completed my journey. I arrived on 26 sept. I just realised my first time in KLIA main terminal is during march 2009. After KLIA was open in 1998, 11 years later I set foot there. By the way until now I never use the ERL before hehe since its operation began in 2002. There is a way for saving klia train fares from rm 35 to rm 15. This will require you to wait 30 mins at putrajaya. The average malaysian hourly wage is about rm 20. So by waiting 30 mins you save RM 20 better than working 1 hr hehe.

How to get from KL Sentral to LCCT cheap and fast

The ERL is launching a bus service from LCCT to Salak Tinggi and from there we can take the high speed rail to KL Sentral for RM 12.50. Why I say this is cheap, please take a look at the fare table. Who will want to pay RM 35 to get from KLIA to KL Sentral when they can break the journey into 2 parts KLIA-Salak Tinggi to KL Sentral. The total cost? RM 12.5+ RM 3.2. What a huge saving. I will also hv the option to go to BTS which will be the future Southern Intercity bus terminal since I can change to STAR which is nearer to my home.

I wonder what is taking the ERL so long to realise LCCT is growing rapidly compared to KLIA main terminal. Anyway it is better late than never since I always use budget airlines. By the way those who are above 55 Malaysian get another 30% discount. Since LCCT was open in March 2006, it takes almost 3 years for ERL to realise a missed opportunity. The LCCT passenger traffic of about 15 million maximum capacity could earn ERL a potential revenue of RM 15 million annually assuming about 20% of the passenger takes this service. Perhaps it is small money for ERL anyway. Domestic restructuring begin in August 2006, Singapore-KL liberalisation from Feb 2008 and by Dec 2008 there are 8.9 million passenger at LCCT.

Road to Our First Home

Finding a house in 小岛 is not an easy task. Ever since our ROM in March '09 I started to look around for ideal home. I viewed not less than 30 flats in 6 months time and met more than 20 housing agents.
Finally we settled with a tiny humble house in Clementi. In the process, we met different people, visited different HDB estates and learnt different bank loan packages. It was really a great learning & experience. The road was bumpy but the end result was rewarding.
At first, we wanted a flat in Dover because there are 7 good schools in vicinity including NUS, ACS(I), ACJC, Farifield, UWC etc. Then we realised the price is beyound our reach so we changed target(ssss)... Then our "Malaysian" inside us wanted a big house. So we only target EA/EM/5-room. At first I have so many criteria such as high floor, N-S facing, no afternoon sun, windy, unblock, good size toilet, move-in condition, nice neighbour, quiet etc. Actually, there isn't any HDB flat in the whole Singapore fulfill all terms. If there is, those are not for sale. I learnt to be more realistic so I made adjustment to my criteria. I lost count how many times I changed my mind.
I have viewed many flats.
Dover - 3-room x 5, 4-room x 1
Teck Whye - EM x 1, 5-room x 1
CCK/Yew Tee - 4-room x 4, 5-room x 1
Bt Panjang - EA x 1, 4-room x 4, 5-room x 5
Bishan/Toa Payoh/AMK - EM x 1, EA x 1, Jumbo x 1, 5-room x 1, 4-room x 3
Tanglin Halt/C'wealth - 3-room x 7, 2-room x 1
Teban/Pandan - 5-room x 1, 4-room x 2, 3-room x 1
West Coast - 4-room x 2
Clementi - 1 and only 1 and we bought it!

Lesson learned,
1. Don't limit yourself to one fixed area!
We burst the myth. We concurrently targeted at many areas such as Dover, Bishan, AMK, Bt Panjang, Teban, Tanglin Halt, West Coast etc etc... Yet in the end we bought Clementi. Hah! We have never thought of it because Clementi was notorious for it sky-rocket high price. But God's grace is sufficient hehe :)
2. Get an in-principal approval from bank before searching for a flat within budget.
Don't trust the bank too easily. Try to verify with the bank the maximum loan amount so as to avoid wasting time on expesive flats. Check, double check and re-check again. My mistake was trusting them our loan amount was XXX. So we targeted at EA/EM/5-room flats in Bishan, AMK, Toa Payoh areas. Then we checked again. The loan was actually lower, YYY. Then we switched target to EA/EM/5-room in Bt Panjang. We almost bought a 5-room in Gangsa Road even though I don't like the small windows in the MBR (master bedroom). As we happily go and apply for home loan, we were told that our max loan amount is even lower, ZZZ. We failed to buy. So damn disappointed. What to do? Luckily we haven't offer any Option Fee yet.
3. Don't give up.
After the Gangsa Road incident, I stopped viewing for a while. Agent still called to view smaller flats but I refused to go. Until the 2nd quarter HDB price index released, we felt the urgency. I resumed my task. Worked extra hard to fix viewing appointments. Within 2 weeks, we found it!
4. Don't stick one single agent.
Unless you die die must get in a particular area AND unless the person is a SPECIALIST in that particular area. Specialist might have the access to the new listings (in that particular area) so they can provide first hand info. For a non-specialist agent, the likelihood of you finding a flat in the newspaper or website is the same. We maintained relationship with several agents at the same time continue to search for listing every possible way. In the end, managed to contact the Clementi flat sole seller agent from the internet.
5. Argue all you can (constructively) but don't sour the relationship.
In 3rd quarter, the economy results seems to be improving. Unemployment rate controlled and the consumer index increased. All these good and bad news lead to higher HDB asking price. We developed very very very bad mood. We argued over the phone almost every other day. We have even planned for the worse case scenario. Just rent a room in a friend's house. As much as possible, Miao2 didn't want that to happen. The picture of 2 adults squeeze in a tidy room spurred us on.
The next big task is to,
1. Sign OTP, get loan, attend HDB appointment, get the key and get the house.
2. Renovation and buy furniture.
3. Move out from Dover. I'll miss this place :(
4. Begin our new life. Yeah!

Wedding gown and photos

In the end we bought a simple gown in Singapore.

History...
In case you forget again. We did talk about this for many many times.

Option 1
Sign up for a RM999 package in KK. We touch down on 19 Nov 1150pm. Go to the studio on 20 Nov. Select gown but no time to take photos. Use it for the customanry & dinner on 21 Nov. Bring it to KL for dinner. Ask my sister to return it. We can only take the indoor shots after wedding. The next we go back is CNY but don't think they are open.

Option 2
Buy a simple gown from the shopping center I mentioned. It's about RM300. We can only shop for the gown on 20 Nov. I assure you, there will be thousands other things to do.

Option 3
Sign up a package in JB when you are back to Singapore. We'll have more time to do the shopping TOGETHER, then select gown, then take photos. But I have no idea how much is it gonna cost.

Option 4
Get a gown from Singapore

Regardless which option we adopt, I'm printing 2 albums for our outdoor KK shots. medium size about A4 size with 20 pages plus minus.

Compare less in life and just do your own things

Dont always compare between yourself and others and you will be less miserable. Instead spend the time to compare and do what you think you should do. This is a more efficient way since comparing diverts your attention and by focusing your attention on your limited time you will get what you want the most out of your life. You can call this a miracle but its always sweeter and positive solving problems this way. No one knows if his/her choice is correct or wrong but its better than staying put while time passes us by. Some people are wiser if they can tell what is the thing that they want in life be it family time or career progression. The worse thing is that many people are stress up all their life and still looking for an answer. Just derive more happiness in your daily life is a good start. If you start your day in sadness you will end your day in sadness. Look forward to everyday and everyday in the morning at least you know what you are seeking when the sun sets. Dont go home each day and at nite feel so tired and bored with your life. That is not what you are born for. Energy is limitless. The fact you feel tired and bored is because the brain is dull and you must reenergize yourself with positive ideals just like those millionaire, for them to save give then untold happiness and if you ask them to spend they will cry. Its just how you train your brain to think. Why worry about work when you are after work. You should be worrying about yourself and your family instead of the work.

Is 4 months a long time?

Dorby cannot get out of boredom. The key to this cure is to use your time wisely. Most of the time we use money to spend our way out of boredom. But a better way is to earn money out of your boredom. Thats why people say u spend less when you are busy earning money, time pass very fast and u wont complain that you are bored and its the best way to save since you have no time to spend. One must be very clear what is the objective and once you know the goal time will pass faster because you are doing something you are happy with.

I am more of the solitary type of people and i seldom join the crowd. Just do your own things will give u more satisfaction then you realise. Sometimes I wonder if you help your frens to pass time or your frens help you to pass time. One should train to be equally happy when they are alone or with company. This will be the key to happiness and the most adaptable sort of person. I also need to be more patient on myself and others.

If you are those who are bored easily and constantly need things to keep you occupied, a word of advise take an hour or so try to use a pen and write down your thoughts. I always do this when I am alone and do not have anything with me to pass my time. Perhaps I got this habit when I am travelling a few hours on the bus, train and flights because I dont sleep if I am not tired. Instead of playing games, I will read, think or more likely surf the internet. Sleep is a physiological need for you to recharge not for you to be lazy. Perhaps you are blinded to think you derive satisfaction when you sleep but actually your soul will not feel any better after you sleep.

When you watch astro you are really wasting your time. Since you pay and you dont earn with that time. If the entertainment is free i at least can say I use my time to exchange free entertainment if time = money. If you pay astro, you loose money and u loose time. So you loose money twice is how you define entertainment. Internet is a bit different because you are suppose to gain something from paying for the service. So comparison wise internet is better than astro because internet encompasses entertainment if u can find the free source. I can live without tv but not without internet.

Some people choose to sleep because they are tired, some people choose to sleep because they have nothing better to do. But most importantly when you are old you will have lots of time to sleep. I witness this fact from what my parents are doing now after they are retired. Thats what I call real boredom. So when you are young try to sleep less at least you will regret less when you are old.

I will return by end of October 09

I am back in Munich to write my thesis in July 09. At the end of October I will come back and start my life with dorby. I am ready to settle down and i will no longer live my life alone because i have my dorby. I will cherish the time I have with dorby........

When I think back March 09 - July 09 is one of the most tiring days in my life where i took the most flights during this few months running between germany, thailand, malaysia and singapore. Short to say its also a point in time where a huge protest break loose in Bangkok and the swine flu outbreak which is quite contagious. Many things happen to me like I am married now and also this is the turning point that I wish to settle down. Life is always what you have the most you will feel bored. So now I will cherish a time where I can stay in peace and no more travelling which drains you mentally and physically. Some people think they are those who likes to travel but they have no idea of what type of person they are until they really tasted hardcore travelling. So to those out there, you should cherish your time and complain less because travelling entails stress beyond what you can imagine and you must always be prepared in your mind and body of any sudden change of events. YOU are on YOUR own. God Bless.

Stuff that I bought

Home trip is getting more and more tiring and stressful.
Preparing for customary wedding is quite troublesome. A lot of stuff to buy. Stuff that somehow symbolises something. But it was quite fun to shop around and look for value-for-money stuff. When I found these stuff, I was happy and relieved.
Bought a red umbrella, red clothes, ang pao packets to be used on wedding day.
New bedsheet for new room.
Bowls, plates, chopsticks, cups in pairs to represent food. We will be prosperous and well fed. Both of us :)
Some groceries like shampoo, toothpaste, slippers etc to symbolise abundant life. Everything will be enough in our life. Something like that la... I dunno la..
Candle light stand, to symbolise continuing the family 香火
Still need to buy some makeup.. This one very important! In the old days only rich family and afford makeup. It symbolises wealth and good life for the bride. hehe..
Besides all these, maybe need to buy some other stuff. See how it goes.

My Sad Sad Day.... :(

1st June 2009 is a sad sad day for me.
Firstly, my ung ung is leaving for Bangkok the next day.
And I hit my little Materia :'( Gotta spend a few hundred dollar to knock it back. Lesson learnt. Don't rely too much on the reverse sensor :(
Finally found a cheaper workshop in the ulu-ulu industrial area. Knocked the car body carefully. Not repaint job. In the end charged me $100... :)

Busy Internship Break #1

Break is no long a break. People get busier during break time.
28 Apr - Back from Bangkok to KL
29 Apr - Meet as many people as possible in KL
30 Apr - Take KTMB to Woodlands. Reached at 8am and had a joy ride in little Materia to Jevois St. BKE & Clementi Road heavy jam :( Dorby woke up earlier than usual on a non-working day to fetch ung at Woodlands. BKE towards Woodlands is almost empty. Make M'sia marriage cert, go Oakley then go Hort Park...
Then back to Dover home for a nap. Visit Hanzhong at his new house in Bt Batok and ate frog leg porridge.
1 May - Labour Day is supposed to be a break, too. But we are busy, busy & busy. Chop 1 free parking at Killiney Road and walk to Plaza Sing for Wolverine. Halfway passed by Istana and their Open house caught our eyes. We went in.. but nothing to eat :(

Nevermind... let's eat dim sum at The Cathay and redeem my M1 credit card Bonus$. After movie, we view flat in Bukit Panjang. Saw a nice B163 5-room flat but took too long to decide. It's now taken :( WA.....
2 May - Ung ung wash car for the first time. Now he knows how hard it is for a sai sai jek dorby to wash car all by herself. Then we go out view more flats in Bishan in the evening. Sort of decided on Bt Panjang. Shall wait for the new MRT.
3 May - Back to Bangkok and back to normal life.
Life's tough. When there is no break, we complain there is no break. When there is break, we make ourselves tired and look forward to the next break.

Bangkok Trip #2

My second trip to Bangkok. Places I visited are more or less the same as the 1st trip. But in this trip, I experienced new things such as new airport, Thai style cinema, Platinum fashion mall, authentic Thai food and FREE~~~ city tour on a tram.
We missed the aquarium at Siam Paragon the last time. This time round, we will again give it a miss. Haha..
At Siam Paragon, the most important thing is to eat lunch. At basement, there are plenty of restaurants. Most of them can be found in Singapore but not Fuji, a japanese restaurant. Food is delicious and not too expensive. We successfully psycho ys to treat us. Should psycho him more often hehe... :p
Yummy...
After lunch, we hop to another huge shopping mall, Central World. This mall is less crowded and things are slightly cheaper. I bought a pair a Geox for 1,480Baht. Wow!! The swensen's here are also cheaper. 1 nice chocolate sundea with brownies & chocolate bits only 69Baht. Should eat more.

After walking for the whole day, we pack some fast food and return to ung ung apartment. The apartment is small but enough for 2 of us. If we can find a HDB with master bedroom as big as this, we will buy the HDB immediately.2nd day is very very hot. We took free tram around the city. The tram got no steering. Amazing. I don't understand the tour guide. So along the way, I just took pictures.

Bushes in the shape of an elephant.
Tuk tuk..
Sai Cing Cao (Giant Swing)
Democracy Monument
Wat ??? I dunno the name. I came here last time. Last time walked in the compound until almost heat stroke.
This is where ung ung ung work.
Leaving Bangkok on the 3rd day. If someone tell you there is nothing to eat at the airport, don't believe him. If you do believe him, bring some thin Pizza Hut crush pizza from town and eat at the airport.
I probably won't go to Bangkok again. But I have a shopping list for ung ung.
Groceries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, clothing, cute tissue pack, cute stationery, cute album and all other cute stuff.

Too bad, kp and hz didn't come. They are scared of demonstration and flu. But nothing happened at all.
